Be Strong

1 You therefore, my ^{▼▼ Or child
,} ^bson, ^cbe strong in the grace that is in ^dChrist Jesus. 2 The things ^ewhich you have heard from me in the presence of ^fmany witnesses, ^gentrust these to ^hfaithful men who will be ⁱable to teach others also. 3 ^jSuffer hardship with me, as a good ^ksoldier of ^lChrist Jesus. 4 No soldier in active service ^mentangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 Also if anyone ⁿcompetes as an athlete, he ^{▼▼ Lit is not crowned}does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. 6 ^pThe hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

8 Remember Jesus Christ, ^qrisen from the dead, ^rdescendant of David, ^saccording to my gospel, 9 ^{▼▼ Lit in which}for which I ^usuffer hardship even to ^vimprisonment as a ^wcriminal; but ^xthe word of God ^yis not imprisoned. 10 For this reason ^zI endure all things for ^aathe sake of those who are chosen, ^abso that they also may obtain the ^acsalvation which is in ^adChrist Jesus and with it ^aeeternal glory. 11 ^afIt is a trustworthy statement: For ^agif we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, ^ahwe will also reign with Him;
If we ^{▼▼ Lit will deny
,} ^ajdeny Him, He also will deny us;
13 If we are faithless, ^akHe remains faithful, for ^alHe cannot deny Himself.

An Unashamed Workman

14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly ^amcharge them in the presence of God not to ^anwrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to ^aopresent yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling ^apthe word of truth. 16 But ^aqavoid ^arworldly and empty chatter, for ^{▼▼ Lit they will make further progress in ungodliness}it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their ^{▼▼ Lit word}talk will spread like ^{▼▼ Or cancer}gangrene. Among them are ^avHymenaeus and Philetus, 18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that ^awthe resurrection has already taken place, and they upset ^axthe faith of some. 19 Nevertheless, the ^ayfirm foundation of God stands, having this ^azseal, ^ba“The Lord knows those who are His,” and, ^bb“Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.”

20 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and ^bcsome to honor and some to dishonor. 21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from ^bdthese things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, ^beprepared for every good work. 22 Now ^bfflee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, ^bgfaith, love and peace, with those who ^bhcall on the Lord ^bifrom a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant ^bjspeculations, knowing that they ^bkproduce ^{▼▼ Lit fightings}quarrels. 24 ^bmThe Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, ^bnable to teach, patient when wronged, 25 ^bowith gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, ^bpif perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to ^bqthe knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from ^brthe snare of the devil, having been ^bsheld captive ^{▼▼ Or by him, to do His will}by him to do his will.
